Build your own PC: Step One

May 21, 2007 – 10:56 am | by admin

So you want to build your own PC! Like I mentioned before, it really is very simple to do as long as you follow the few guidelines that come along with the build.

These guidelines are as follows:

  1. A good rule of thumb is to make sure you have a good clean work area of relative size.
  2. Make sure you have the tools available to do the work. Usually a small phillips head screwdriver(with a non-magnetic head), thermal paste for the CPU, and plenty of time to do the work; roughly about an hour. All the screws should be provided in the provided packaging for each product.
  3. And MOST IMPORTANTLY, always make sure you are grounded. Meaning, if you have been walking on carpet before doing the work, or are standing on carpet while doing the work, make sure you ground yourself before touching the electronics. The easiest way to do this is to simply touch a part of the case that is not painted.

As long as you follow these simple rules, you should be able to put a PC together successfully. One further rule of thumb is, while inserting parts into the computer, DON’T FORCE THEM. We will get into this later on in the discussion. But for now focus on making sure you have the ideal location for the work to be done.

A few key things to have to help set up a good work area are listed below.

  1. Anti-Static Mat
  2. Anti-Static Wristband
  3. Thermal Paste

The next step in the process will detail what is needed to build your PC. The first thing you need to do is think about what your budget for the project is. This will be determined by what you will be using the PC for. Everyday use, including surfing the internet, transferring pictures, burning music and more. Office use, including office documents, basic emailing, some internet usage and more. And my personal favorite Gaming. If you are a gamer, your PC will need to reach new heights in all categories. We can cover it all in detail later but think about what category you fall in. The steps to build the computer will still be the same all around, but buying the parts will differ. Be ready by the next post.
