Me and a Mac
July 1, 2008 – 11:43 pm | by TheYoungGuyThe words I never expected to speak. I might be buying a Mac. I have been reading a lot about them lately and have actually even changed my desktop theme over to mimic a OSX theme, including the dock at the bottom. Its actually pretty cool.

So obviously the first Mac I looked at was the new Macbook Air. I am not impressed at all. The lack of an optical drive makes no sense to me. We have not yet reached the age where these are no longer needed. Granted a lot of applications can now be downloaded but Im not yet comfortable with that idea yet. The lack of multiple USB ports is another kicker for me. I use multiple USB devices and one port just doesn’t work for me. I shouldn’t have to buy a separate USB Hub just to use certain devices. And I know Wifi is huge and getting bigger and better these days but not having an Ethernet port!!! Not Cool Apple.
Next in line for me was the ever so popular MacBook. While a nice step up from the Air, its not what Im looking for. Still only 2 USB ports, but I may be able to deal with that. The real kickers for me were the small 13.3-inch TFT and having only 1GB of RAM just wouldn’t cut it for me. Granted, I wouldn’t be using this to game with, I would be running some rather intense applications on it that would require more RAM. So MacBook is a negative.
In comes the MacBook Pro. So let me start by saying I really like this notebook. But what am I really getting for the cost? At $2500.00, what am I getting that I can’t get 3 or 4 of in the PC world. So is OS X really “all that”? That is what I am paying for right? I mean hardware wise, its almost identical to a standard PC with x86 architecture right? This thing has a top-of-the-line T9300 CPU, a 250GB hard drive, and 2GB of RAM. Hardware wise this thing has all I need.
But why do I need it? Well I have not used a Mac for more than a few minutes at a time, but each time I have its hard to pull me away. I like the usability, the apps, and many other things. But mainly because I am a musician and web designer. And I believe Macs can provide much more ease-of-use for me in these departments. So you tell me, is it worth the $2500?
I do want to also point out that I will never give up my PC. My lively hood is build around PC’s. Im a computer tech so the idea of not having one would be out of the question. Buying a Mac would be something for entertainment and training purposes. I would like to broaden my knowledge about them and see what a Mac can really do.
Is it worth the cost?
