Windows 7 Preview

July 26, 2008 – 12:42 am | by TheYoungGuy

Windows 7
What do you know about Windows 7? There isn’t a whole lot out about it yet, other than a few details spreading like wildfire around the net, but visually it looks great from the limited screen caps. Steve Ballmer and Bill Gates have been marketing it pretty heavily, however their message is still that Vista is the greatest Operating System out. There are definitely arguments about that.

I am curious to know what you know about Windows 7! Let me know. I am going to be writing a full post about it soon and would like to hear some feedback about the new OS that will replace the horrendous Vista.

AVG Anti-Virus 8.0

July 7, 2008 – 7:40 pm | by TheYoungGuy

Arguably the most popular free anti-virus solution, AVG is trying to solidify its rain at the top with AVG Anti-Virus 8.0. How does AVG compete with popular paid for solutions such as Trend Micro or Norton? Well many people already know about the problems with Norton being a resource hog. With Norton 360, Symantec claims to have solved this issue but through my own personal experience, I would disagree. Before I see any true benefits from Norton, I have to have a minimum of 1GB of RAM in an XP machine and 2GB of RAM in a Vista PC. And lets be honest, the majority of folks these days don’t have that. The average I see daily in an XP machine is 512MB and 1GB in a Vista machine. So you do the math.

As for Trend Micro Anti-Virus or Internet Security, I actually like both. They don’t utilize much RAM at all. I don’t see any effect on my system when running scans. Scan wise, i would not say its the absolute best, but if you keep the updates running and the scans automatic then you should not have any problems. I personally recommend either of these products.

AVG Anti-Virus 8.0

Now to AVG. Here is what I personally know about AVG. I am a PC Tech supervisor and deal with 20-30 computers daily. More than half of the clients I deal with use AVG and bring them in with viruses. The defense they always give me is, “it’s free”. And I respond with, “so were the viruses”. How much is your data worth? Remember you get what you pay for. I don’t want you to think I am completely against AVG, they have improved drastically over the last few years. I just have not seen a reasonable amount of improvement to warrant download.

On the good side, AVG 8.0 is easy to understand and work with. They do provide free support at any time which can’t be said about other companies. If you are responsible with your web surfing ventures you may not have any problems.

What do you think about it?

Me and a Mac

July 1, 2008 – 11:43 pm | by TheYoungGuy

The words I never expected to speak. I might be buying a Mac. I have been reading a lot about them lately and have actually even changed my desktop theme over to mimic a OSX theme, including the dock at the bottom. Its actually pretty cool.
Macbook Pro
So obviously the first Mac I looked at was the new Macbook Air. I am not impressed at all. The lack of an optical drive makes no sense to me. We have not yet reached the age where these are no longer needed. Granted a lot of applications can now be downloaded but Im not yet comfortable with that idea yet. The lack of multiple USB ports is another kicker for me. I use multiple USB devices and one port just doesn’t work for me. I shouldn’t have to buy a separate USB Hub just to use certain devices. And I know Wifi is huge and getting bigger and better these days but not having an Ethernet port!!! Not Cool Apple.

Call of Duty: World at War

June 21, 2008 – 4:57 pm | by TheYoungGuy

The Call of Duty series is back after an award winning Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, with Call of Duty: World at War. Not much has been released in details yet, but it appears to be set in either the Korean War Japan or Vietnam. Is this a good move for the CoD series. After the much praised Modern Warfare, most people expected a follow-up in the same era. I am curious to see how this will play out in the minds of gamers around the world. It is to be released on the XBox 360, PS3, and PC on an as yet unreleased date.

Check out the trailer below and tell me what you think.

Are You 3G?

June 12, 2008 – 11:51 pm | by TheYoungGuy

Im not going to write a long drawn out post about the new iPhone 3G. Its pretty simple. It has built in 3G network capability. Wow, Great, Wonderful. Yes there are other new features too, but my understanding is those features will be available on the current gen iPhones. I don’t want you to think I am dogging the new or original iPhone, but I do want to give you a heads up. Not everyone will have 3G capabilities. Do you?

iPhone 3G
Before you go and drop your cash on a new phone, make sure your area has 3G coverage. Go to this link and check your area. Its simple. If you do have coverage then great. I would recommend that if you already have an iPhone and are happy with it, then don’t bother unless you have the funds to throw away, but if you are in the same category as me, those without iPhones, then maybe the 3G is the right one for you.

Firefox Download Day

June 9, 2008 – 3:07 pm | by TheYoungGuy

With release candidate 2 for Firefox 3.0 just being released, it shouldn’t be much longer until we are blessed with the greatness that is Firefox. Mozilla is trying to set a new world record with the most software downloads in one by staging “Download Day” for the official launch of Firefox 3. The date has not yet been set but as mentioned before it should be soon.

Some of the new features include “one-click bookmarking, the smart location bar and lightning fast performance.” Security is also being amped up for the new release. “Firefox 3 includes phishing and malware protection, plus new instant site ID info.”

Download Day

It couldn’t be better.
